SUMMARY:CC + Rushmor Records Present: Os Mutantes (Brazil) with Special Guest Esme Patterson
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, March 13th • 7p • 18+\n$25 ADV // $30 DOS\n\nOs Mutantes (“The Mutants”) are an influential Brazillian psych-rock project that were synonymous with the Tropicália movement of the late 1960s. Tropicália harbored and presented world-class multimedia art that specified in critiquing Brazil’s regime. Popular musicians of the effort include Gal Costa\, Caetano Veloso\, founder Gilberto Gil\, and Jorge Ben Jor\, among others. When Os Mutantes formed\, they reached from a kaleidoscopic\, flower-poppy palette with acts from the English-speaking world like The Beatles\, Jimi Hendrix\, and Sly & the Family Stone to then meld the canvas with bossa nova\, tropicálismo\, samba\, and the cultural legacy of the Brazilian art vanguards from the modernist movement.\nThe Mutants are cited as a major influence to many acts in the United States and Europe. Beck paid tribute to the group with his single “Tropicália” from the album Mutations. Talking Heads frontman David Byrne has also worked to publish and promote the group’s music through his Luaka Bop label.\nKurt Cobain publicly requested a reunion tour from the trio in 1993\, writing a letter to Arnaldo Baptista\, but the band’s first live performance since 1978 was at London’s Barbican Arts Centre on May 22\, 2006 – (though without Rita Lee\, who was replaced with Zélia Duncan on vocals). This performance was followed by shows in NYC\, LA (w/ the Flaming Lips)\, San Francisco\, Seattle\, Denver\, Chicago\, and Miami.\nCactus Club and Rushmor Records are extremely excited to present this historical and influential touchstone of international music

SUMMARY:MARCO BENEVENTO w/ special guest MIKE DILLON & PUNKADELICK
DESCRIPTION:MARCO BENEVENTO\nw/ special guest MIKE DILLON & PUNKADELICK \nTHE BACK ROOM @ COLECTIVO\nMILWAUKEE\, WI \nTHURSDAY\, MARCH 16\nDoors: 7pm | Show: 8pm \nAll Ages \nBENEVENTO\nAlbum Release Show \nTICKETS & MORE INFO HERE \n\nHallucinatory keyboard wizard Marco Benevento performs live at The Back Room @ Colectivo in Milwaukee\, WI on Thursday\, March 16 to celebrate the release of his latest studio effort\, simply titled\, Benevento. The 11-track collection presents 40-plus minutes of small-batch psychedelia\, bubbled up from his home studio at the base of the Catskill Mountains in Woodstock\, NY.The album’s title nods to Paul McCartney‘s first solo record and like Macca’s eponymous release\, Benevento is a similarly loose\, low-key affair where song sketches and sunrise jams share space with more constructed tracks. Benevento plays all of the instruments (with few exceptions)\, while also producing and engineering the recording. \nIn contrast to Let It Slide\, Benevento’s minimalistic 2019 full-length collaboration with producer Leon Michels\, his latest 11-song studio effort is heavily saturated and exploratory\, built from countless layers of keyboards\, bounced to four-track tape. Deeply indebted to the West African psychedelia of artists such as Francis Bebey\, Kiki Gyan and William Onyeabor\, the songs are rhythmic and repetitive\, built into thick mosaics of sound. \nRecording was conducted amidst stacks of gear in varying states of repair\, all fodder for inspiration during long quarantine-dictated solo jam sessions. In this environment\, Benevento unlocked his archives\, mining for unfinished song ideas\, and surrendered to the machines\, coaxing beats and melodies from both go-to favorites and gear that had long been collecting dust. \n“It was wall-to-wall keyboards\, mics\, amps\, drums\, the place was about to explode\,” Benevento laughs. “Looking back\, my studio was a good place to be trapped while the world was shutdown. I was surrounded by tape machines and gear. The album became a psychedelic window into my studio and my brain\, a document of a crazy dude losing his mind in the woods and maybe regaining it.” \nFor his performance in Milwaukee\, Benevento will be joined by his band with bassist Karina Rykman and drummer Chris Corsico. Acclaimed experimental-rock trio Mike Dillon & Punkadelick opens the evening. More information and tickets available HERE.

SUMMARY:CIRCLES AROUND THE SUN with special guest Jenny O. at Turner Hall
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles-based instrumental supergroup Circles Around the Sun is a contemporary instrumental rock band\, initially formed with the purpose of creating music for “Fare Thee Well\,” a series of reunion concerts played by the surviving members of the Grateful Dead. Those shows celebrated the band’s 50th anniversary and served as their official send-off\, while Circles Around the Sun was designed to reflect the Dead’s overall spacy and groove-laden feel. After the tour\, the group released a self-titled album from the “Fare Thee Well” gigs\, supporting the record with their own road trip. The response was so positive that they continued on with a follow-up project\, Let It Wander\, in 2018. This record was less influenced by the Dead and more free-form\, delivering on the roots influence of jazz-funk\, soul\, and fusion. The band underwent a fundamental transition in 2019. After completing the Meets Joe Russo EP and a third album\, their guitarist Neal Casal committed suicide on August 26\, 2019. He left his bandmates a note asking for them to continue in his absence– to continue recording\, touring\, and playing together. The band decided to carry on with a rotating cast of guitarists\, landing on John Lee Shannon as the permanent replacement. \nIn this metamorphosis\, Circles Around the Sun spans both heartbreak and hope. Doors close; windows open; new directions extend themselves in mysterious ways. But sometimes you know it’s real from the first beat. It just clicks. It’s just how Neal would want it. It’s Circles Around The Sun.

SUMMARY:Hear Here Presents: Greg Koch feat. The Koch Marshall Trio w/ Stephen Hull Experience (trio)
DESCRIPTION:Greg Koch makes his Cooperage debut with the Koch Marshall Trio and Stephen Hull!\nMilwaukee native Greg Koch has forged a successful career\nas “a guitar player’s guitarist.” He is not only a fiercely creative player with a whole trick bag of impressive techniques\, ranging from Albert Lee chicken-pickin’ to Albert King string-bending to all-out Hendrixian abandon\, he is also is a clinician for Fishman Transducers and his wildly popular “guitar test drive” videos (4\,000 to date) for Wildwood Guitars of Louisville\, Colorado have generated 50 million views. Koch also has a signature axe which was released in 2019 by Reverend Guitars\, named the Greg Koch Signature Gristlemaster. The guitar colors were given somewhat humorous names like: Kochwork Orange\, and Blucifer. He is also a best-selling method book author and video instructor for music publisher Hal Leonard and a contributing columnist for a variety of guitar magazines including Guitar Player. Guitar great Steve Vai\, who released Koch’s 2001 album The Grip on his own Favored Nations label\, heaped praise on his fellow guitarist: “Greg Koch is\none of those rare guitarists that can blend various styles\nwith a light-hearted approach and a tremendous amount of technique. Hearing him play is inspiring to a guitar player to try to achieve greatness on the instrument.”\n——–\nDylan Koch gravitated to the drums early on in his life using kitchen utensils to play along with music as soon as he could walk. After digesting an early diet of Ginger Baker\, Keith Moon\, Mitch Mitchell and John Bonham\, Dylan was mentored by the legendary Tom Brechtlein (Chick Corea/Robben Ford). In high school\, Dylan participated in the Jazz Institute at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and furthered his studies at the McNally Smith School of Music in the Twin Cities. While still in his teens he performed with young guitar guns Tallan Noble Latz and Jared James Nichols and has performed alongside his father with such artists as Robben Ford\, Little Feat’s Paul Barrere\, Jon Cleary\, David Grissom\, Roscoe Beck and Malford Milligan. Dylan was recently nominated for drummer of the year by the Wisconsin Area Music Awards (WAMI). Says proud papa Koch\, “This is the third official recording with the kid. And what’s great about it is\, you can’t teach the grease. And he gets it. He gets the filth. I guess he’s just got my filthy DNA.”\nHailing from the Twin Cities area\, Toby Lee Marshall came from a musical family\, playing piano for years until falling under the spell of the sound of the organ while at a baseball game\nat age seven. His fascination for the Hammond B3 took hold after his Dad took him to see Steve Cherewan playing with Dr. Mambo’s Combo during their legendary residency at Bunker’s\nin Minneapolis. Steve mentored Toby in the ways of the B3 and he hit the ground running\, landing a gig with bluesman Lonnie Brooks while still a teen. He would go on to travel the world as a member of Bernard Allison’s band. Following a long hiatus from music\, Toby has returned to the music scene with\na vengeance in the smoking Koch Marshall Trio. “Toby had actually retired from music\,” Koch explained. “He decided to stop touring for several years to help raise his two young kids. But now he’s so excited to be playing in this trio because it’s just such a perfect format for him to let his freak flag fly. It’s the perfect combination of this kind of churchy\, bluesy\, funky\, jazzy\, rock\, chicken-pickin’ thing\, and he fits right in.”\n——–\nStephen Hull gives the blues community exciting evidence that the future of music is in good hands. Born in 1999\, a native of Racine\, Wisconsin\, Stephen Hull started playing blues at age 14 and never stopped\, taking cues from Albert King and B.B. King as he developed his sweet\, soulful guitar sound. Balancing that with his absolutely stellar lead vocals and infectiously buoyant personality\, Stephen has been rising fast in the blues clubs of Chicago and venues across southeastern Wisconsin. Appearing in blues magazines such as Living Blues (U.S.) and Blues & Rhythm: The Gospel Truth (UK)\, Stephen has been interviewed by a myriad of media including Lake Effect (broadcast on Milwaukee’s NPR). From the Chicago Blues Fest to the Mississippi Valley Blues Fest\, The Stephen Hull Experience is making headlines.

SUMMARY:Gloin • Fellow Kinsman
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 28th • 8pm • 18+\n$12 ADV // $15 DOS\n*on sale now*\n\nGloin is a four-piece noise rock group from Toronto\, Canada\, known for their cathartic live sets and eclectic songwriting. Through bombastic rhythmic constructs\, savvy arrangements and fervid melodies\, their music spreads much like a tidal wave; the result of sheer entropic force harnessed through a “wall-of-sound Maelstrom” that is all at once jagged and sinuous. This sonic raz-de-marée reached new dizzying heights on debut album\, “We Found This”\, released in October 2022 via Mothland.\n\nDirect support from Fellow Kinsman\, an alternative/surf-rock project formed by multi-instrumentalist Nate Kinsman. Ever evolving out of Milwaukee\, WI. From parking-lot mayhem to the downtown disco. Soap opera heartaches and clammy hand ballroom dancing. You can find their new record ‘Where Were You’ out on all platforms.

SUMMARY:Garcia Peoples w/ Chris Forsyth • A. James Shelp and the Rolling Hills
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, April 9th • 7pm • 18+\n$15 ADV // $20 DOS\n*on sale now*\n\n2019 saw the first performances by the full Garcia Peoples lineup\, a six-person behemoth. With a stash of live recordings accumulating at the Live Music Archive\, Garcia Peoples’ music is very much a living entity. Since the release of their previous two albums\, songs have started to expand\, jam suites have grown\, and experiments have been undertaken. Garcia Peoples also back Philadelphia guitarist Chris Forsyth (an expanded Solar Peoples Band has hit double-drummer overdrive several times now)\, and have joined with guitarist Ryley Walker.\nChris Forsyth connects the dots between between anthemic art rock\, chiming atmospherics\, and motorik precision in taut compositions and mercurial improvisations that have earned the Philadelphia-based guitarist a unique reputation as a leading guitar stylist for jam and non-jam band fans alike. His newest studio album Evolution Here We Come\, featuring contributions from Douglas McCombs (Tortoise)\, Marshall Allen (Sun Ra Arkestra)\, Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate)\, Linda Pitmon (Baseball Project)\, Tom Malach (Garcia Peoples)\, Stuart Bogie (Antibalas)\, and Ryan Jewell (Ryley Walker)\, saw release last August on No Quarter.\nLocal support from A. James Shelp and the Rolling Hills\, Moss Folk and Milwaukee Psych Fest founder Andrew Shelp’s new musical outlet. Self described as “cosmic choogle”\, the music tends to be hypnotic with its repetitive\, rural\, folky\, country blues grooves.

SUMMARY:Kiss The Tiger - The Back Room at Colectivo
DESCRIPTION:KISS THE TIGER\nwith special guest Erik Koskinen\n\nIf you like Low Cut Connie\, Bad Bad Hats\, The Heavy Heavy… \nAt a time when the world seems intent on pushing us further inward and further apart\, Kiss the Tiger are here to rattle our bones and bust us out of our cocoons with some good old-fashioned rock and roll. Fronted by the magnetic and disarming Meghan Kreidler\, who draws on her background in theater to break the fourth wall between audience and band with her righteous fist pumps and high kicks\, this is a band that doesn’t just play. They combust. And watching them set the stage ablaze\, it’s hard not to feel that tension that’s been built up in all of us these past few years slowly release\, too\, like a collective exhale set to ratcheting guitars\, buoyant bass lines and Kreidler’s perfectly pitched screams. Theirs is a clean- burning fire. Hell\, you might even call it healing.

SUMMARY:PAUL CHERRY AND THE MATTSON 2 - The Back Room at Colectivo
DESCRIPTION:After meeting serendipitously at Treefort Music Fest in Boise\, Paul Cherry and The Mattson 2 kept in touch and decided to collaborate in the studio and on the road together…. and now they’re thrilled to bring you this Head 2 Head ephemeral music experience\, 4 the heads to the midwest and beyond!! \n——–\nThe Mattson 2’s recent output includes the celebratory\, disco splashed Toro Y Moi single “Millennium” which appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The twin brothers cameoed in the joints video as grumpy orderlies in a mental ward high-jacking instruments from Chaz Bear’s bandmates. Amongst collabs w/ Ray Barbee\, ‪Tommy Guerrero\, Farmer Dave (of ‪Kurt Vile)\, and ‪‪Money Mark (of ‪‪Beastie Boys)‪\, they released Star Stuff in 2017 with Chaz Bear (FKA Chaz Bundick\, AKA Toro Y Moi) — #1 on Billboard contemp. jazz charts — and reinterpreted Coltrane’s legendary A Love Supreme. \n  \nPaul Cherry began his musical journey in a small suburb of Detroit\, playing banjo and guitar into his teenage years. Focused sharply on teaching  himself the piano by playing through the jazz standards of The Real Book\, jazz chords and melodies laid the foundation of Cherry’s signature sound\, at times cross referencing more modern takes on pop jazz from Michael Franks\,  Paul McCartney\, Jeff Lorber\, and Donald Fagen. Paul Cherry’s music evokes a love for sunny ‘70s and ‘80s grooves. Buried beneath  cynicism and introspection is a winking optimism. The juxtapositions of Cherry’s warm  instrumentation and the apathetic lyrics are an exercise in subversion. “I’m so ready to have more fun with my life\,” Cherry sings over a syncopated bassline\, performed by bassist and collaborator Joseph Faught\, convinces us that he’s more than ready – He’s made it.

But it’s the ever-evolving relationships between her closest friends and bandmates that has propelled the Hudson Valley-based artist onto her new album And Southern Star––a truly collaborative effort that ruminates on the choices we make\, and the people we always come back to. \n  \nDavis earned her degree in harp performance at the Crane School of Music\, and has molded her classical music training to create an original and genre-bending catalog that weaves together 60s pop-soaked melodies\, psychedelia and driving folk rock. She met her bandmates at pivotal moments in her life––drummer Alex Coté in childhood\, guitarist Cian McCarthy and bassist Shane McCarthy in college\, and steel guitarist Kurt Johnson in her early twenties. It’s the band’s collective step into adulthood that has informed much of And Southern Star’s thematic landscape. \n  \nNavigating the periphery of past selves\, the coexistence of isolation and excitement in a new environment and the tension of growing away from what we thought we wanted is tackled with a luscious\, kaleidoscopic grace. And Southern Star picks apart the reflection we used to recognize\, while trying to build a new one. “I finally feel like this album is more me than anything else that’s been released\,” Davis says\, adding that producing the album along with her four bandmates allowed them to carve out their own ideas\, rather than someone else’s. Despite playing together for over a decade\, it’s the first time the five-piece have appeared on a full length album together. \n  \nThe bones of And Southern Star was recorded at Old Soul Studios with Kenny Siegal\, a person who was an integral part of Davis’ move to the area. The rest was recorded by Cian McCarthy at Horehound Mansion\, adding to the album’s intimate nature. The album was mixed by Mike Fridmann at Tarbox Road Studios\, who is lovingly nicknamed as the ‘silent sixth member of the band.’ \n  \nDavis describes the band’s bond as “meditative and telepathic\,” adding that although many of the songs were written individually across the past few years\, something instantly clicked once they were together. Opener “Cinderella\,” written by Coté and Davis\, begins with Davis’ distinctive harp plucks and ethereal vocals. It’s a sonic choice that directly points to Davis’ solo beginnings\, before blossoming into the textural patchwork of the band’s contributions. The fairytale wanderings of the song peel back in the album’s dream-like canopy\, where tracks offer an otherworldly escape from the constraints of reality. \n  \nThe album\, however\, doesn’t shy away from the very real\, lingering fog of solitude and uncertainty that comes with entering new chapters. “Far From You\,” written by brothers Cian and Shane McCarthy\, introduces a stark spotlight\, with ghostly vocals and gentle piano accompanying the weight of loss. “Oh but if I was to meet you in the moonlight\,” Davis laments before the song offers a tentative optimism through a stirring\, psychedelic instrumental outro\, written by Davis\, that’s full of bright percussion and driving harp and guitar. This optimism lingers on “Home in the Country\,” also written by Cian McCarthy\, where rousing harmonies and honky-tonk frills encourage us to seek out the blue skies beyond the heavy clouds. \n  \n“Promise” was crafted by Davis and Coté years ago as she was illustrating the pains of a close friend\, but soon found herself relating it to her own life. Like the evolutionary tint of the album’s scenery\, And Southern Star reckons with the changes that creep into a hairpin bend. “The Pearl” is there to anchor these dizzying shifts\, as steel guitar and glittering harp creates a frame around the core-memories that shaped us. “You will always feel like that inner child\,” Davis explains. “Sometimes you’ll forget about them but then it hits you.” \n  \nAnd Southern Star is an album that toes the liminal space of growing into ourselves\, while tugging at parts of the past that we’re desperate to keep. Moving forward\, and accepting change\, is one of the most painful parts of renewal and we can often find ourselves stuck in the difficulty of it all. Davis\, along with her band\, understands that while these bumps may hurt at first\, they’re not forever and just like the message of album track “Saturday Morning”: sometimes “the illusion of darkness breaks its spell.”

SUMMARY:Cactus Club x Hear Here Presents: Frankie and the Witch Fingers • Wine Lips • Fellow Kinsman at The Miramar Theatre
DESCRIPTION:If you tune your ears to the cracks in the San Andreas and listen in for the world gurgling grind\, you might come close to the tectonic thunder that’s been beaming out of L.A. for the past few years under the banner of Frankie and the Witch Fingers. Hashed and hardened in the Midwest Indy enclave of Bloomington and catching the ear of the Chicago psych contingent with their early singles\, the band headed West around the same time that the crew at Permanent put up shop in the Golden State. With records spread across labels like Hypnotic Bridge\, Permanent\, Greenway\, and The Reverberation Appreciation Society\, the band has been an ever-evolving force of rhythm-ripped rock ‘n roll pummel ever since. Anchored by songwriters Dylan Sizemore and Josh Menashe\, the band has kept a rotating door of friends and collaborators moving through their midst along the way\, with each bringing their own particular melt to the mountain of sound the Witch Fingers maintain. \n  \nFollowing the ambitious arc of their opus Monsters Eating People Eating Monsters… the band burrowed further into the street tar grip and pelvic pulse of L.A. rock ‘n roll euphoria with an oil-slick drop-kick of a single — “Cookin’ b/w Tracksuit.” The release accompanied a 5-week U.S. tour that saw the band topping bills at NY’s Bowery Ballroom and gracing the lineups of Levitation in Austin and Shaky Knees Fest in Atlanta. Their time at Levitation also saw the band enter the fest’s revered Sessions series\, recording a live LP that culled from the MEPEM and ZAM records heavily. The session found the band holed up for a week at Super X Ranch outside of Joshua Tree\, California\, finally pressing their stage heat onto a twelve-inch tempest for posterity. The last run oiled the gears for what’s to come\, getting them back into their natural habitat up on the stage\, steaming under the hot lights and sublimating a heady mix of psych-soul singe into a full-body buzz. \n  \nThe upcoming year promises a renewed dedication to tour\, molding their mayhem in the process into its final form before they enter the studio to scrape the scars off of the road to tape. In anticipation\, a new face enters the fray for both the live arena and the gestating new LP. Drummer Nick Aguilar will join now-permanent bassist Nikki Pickle (Death Valley Girls) as the rhythm engine behind the acetylene alchemy of Dylan and Josh. Nick brings a new crunch to the kit\, having honed his craft in the San Pedro / LBC punk scene before touring as the drummer for Mike Watt. The addition of Nick turns up the tumult\, both on stage and in the studio\, and his prolific pound will act as a powerful catalyst for the band’s next direction. The new lineup finds the band as potent as ever\, and following past stints opening for luminaries like OSEES\, Cheap Trick\, and ZZ Top\, the Witch Fingers have more than proven their heft\, now entering a new chapter as heirs of the amp stack kingdom. \n  \nWhile the last record\, and an ensuing storm of dates made Frankie and the Witch Fingers a household handle — burning through a barrage of multicolored vinyl pressings and sparring with indie heavyweights for Billboard chart positions — the band returns from the forge of 2020 and the vice of 2021 to make a case for the rapture of the stage once again. Bringing an audience back to the wellspring to connect to these songs on a metaphysical level\, the band transforms the stage into a sonic scrub for the soul. With years spent pressure-coating their sound into a diamond-hard hydra of heaviness\, the band enters its next phase hungry for the heat of the throng and ready to wrap the Witch Fingers’ grip tighter around the reigns of rock ’n roll.

SUMMARY:DANIEL DONATO'S COSMIC COUNTRY
DESCRIPTION:When people first meet Daniel Donato\, they’re not fully braced for this walking tornado of creative energy. “They think there’s something that tips the scale in ways they don’t understand\,” says Donato about his over-the-top\, slightly manic vibe. “But what actually tips the scale is the amount of thought and analysis I put into my work and art\, all of which is taken from the lessons of my life.”

It has been said\, “You don’t just like Joseph Huber’s music. You feel it’s something that the rest of the world needs to hear\, and how criminal it is that it isn’t spreading far and wide.” That sentiment could be related to the fact that the voices which Huber unearths are subtle and take more than a hurried listen to truly absorb. A person who appears reserved and matter-of-fact in everyday speech brings forth songs that are anything but that.\n*** THIS IS A 21+ EVENT ***
